Some parents like their little one’s clothes to be covered in teddy bears or fairies, but others like a different style: how about these tie-dyed long johns for setting a new trend? They’re available in a bunch of colors and two sizes (9-18 months, 18-24 months) and are made from organic cotton, dyed with low-impact dyes and can be worn on their own or layered in colder weather. They’re also free of flame-retardants but are still certified for sleepwear use because they fit snugly. Very smart!

They may be too young to understand what the letters mean or to pull the wagon, but that won’t stop babies enjoying the feel of these wooden blocks long before they begin to learn from them. Made from basswood, they’re embossed to give a great tactile response. This one’s hand-woven in a women’s co-operative in Central America, from organic cotton. It’s breathable, chemical-free and even the packaging is recycled paper. Instead of using petroleum-based cleaners, which are not particularly safe for investigative little fingers and mouths, these all-purpose cleaning products use natural soybean and palm kernel oils. It sounds odd, but when you see that there’s no ammonia, phosphates, petroleum distillates, chlorine, limonene, terpene products or animal by-products – just natural, safe, pleasant-smelling oils – it starts to make sense. They’re scented with lavender, too, and contain no volatile organic compounds.

A staple basic of babywear is the onesie – a one-piece, button-up suit that’ll fit over diapers.
